ACUPUNCTURE

Acupuncture is one part of the spectrum of treatments of Chinese medicine, one of the most ancient systems of treatment known to mankind. The fact that it still survives to this day gives credence to its efficacy. Scientific evidence has confirmed its benefits.

About Acupuncture

Acupuncture can play a vital part in pain relief, healing and rehabilitation for most medical, musculoskeletal and neurological conditions, treating both body and mind. It offers a holistic approach to the assessment and treatment, finding and treating the root cause of your condition and can prevent problems or their recurrence.

How does Acupuncture work?

The treatment is carried out by inserting a few fine needles into energy points on your body. These points are located and linked on ‘channels’ or ‘meridians’ along which energy flows.

These flows (known to the Chinese as “Qi”) underlie the balanced functioning of the body, and when they become blocked or deficient we become unhealthy.

The points are carefully chosen in order to disperse any blockages and to bring your energy into a better balance, sending out signals to activate energy points.

Energy Flows

The energy flows can increase local blood flow which encourages the healing process, and/or can stimulate nerves located in muscles and other tissues, leading to the release of endorphins, which will calm pain.

Through promoting the body’s natural flow of energy, the body’s natural healing mechanisms are triggered to treat certain conditions, as well as maintain your immune system and general well-being.

Acupuncture and the Brain

We now understand that acupuncture works on a local and body level through stimulation of the nerves. Various neuro–chemicals are released (one example is endorphins), and which can have an impact on the whole body, above all for pain relief, but which can also impact on mood, hormones, and stimulation of healing such as tissue repair. This is easier to understand when we realise that the nervous system regulates many body functions, such as our heartbeat, blood circulation and intestinal movements. Our nerves can cause our blood vessels to constrict and expand, as an example.

Chinese based acupuncture works on these systems, based on the 2,000 years’ experience, and linking cause and effect, so that a map has been drawn up of the points to treat for specific problems. Western acupuncture has taken this further, building on the traditional practise, whilst adding a scientific results based process, and in Dr Temple’s case, using her knowledge of neurology and the central nervous system, to deliver beneficial results for her clients.
